General purpose of the job

The Mechanical Maintenance Technician is responsible to follow all regulatory compliance requirements, maintain and operate the terminal/port in most efficient way. Regulatory compliance refers, but not limited, to safety-OSHA regulations; Environmental-EPA and state regulations; Quality-ASTM standards; USCG and local port authorities. The primary objective of the Mechanical Maintenance Technician is to operate the port and terminal to safely and accurately unload, load and transfer bulk, bag or big bag cementitious products using the plant bulk/bag unloading/loading systems. The Mechanical Maintenance Technician is required to have practical skills for safely operate mobile and stationary equipment used in the material handling operations. The primary responsibility of this position is to operate, repair and maintain machinery both electronic and mechanical equipment such as engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, production machines and other plant equipment related to our port and terminal facilities.
The position holder has responsibility for the operational activities associated with marine operations and cargo unloading-self unloading or open hatch bulk product carriers. These duties will include some basic reporting duties. He/she will focus on ensuring safety, improving barge operation efficiency, and reducing maintenance cost.  

Individual accountabilities

Major Responsibilities:

  • Health and Safety:  Demonstrates a commitment to enforcing all safety policies in each work environments and area. Pursues a culture of safety that is best in class.  Ensures that equipment and processes meet or exceed the OSHA and Argos guidelines. 
  • Environment   Ensures environment policies and practices are a priority in operations management and acts as a steward to the environment.  Helps to reinforce the need to meet or exceed environmental compliance among personnel. 
  • Operations Strategy:  Ensure the use of standardized maintenance practices, identifying improvement opportunities that will lead to higher equipment reliability, improved procedures or reduced cost. Maintaining a focus on the principles of continuous improvement.  Ensure the best value and timely repairs of equipment. Ensure the proper processes and tools are utilized to plan operational activities including plant project management, maintenance programs (regularly scheduled preventative maintenance for fixed and mobile equipment, major maintenance and renovation projects) capital planning, and performance planning including budgeting and forecasting.
  • Operations Analysis and Action Tracking:  Proactive approach to equipment maintenance programs ensuring the optimum use of materials and resources. Maintain effective maintenance programs to minimize costs for all mobile and plant equipment and ensure all government inspections are performed.  Work with Terminal/Port Manager and computer system to ensure accurate and timely information flow and the use of information for reporting and maintenance decisions. Some duties/tasks include, but not limited to:
    • Evaluate equipment condition and make recommendations to Managers and Mechanics prior to repairs. 
    • Maintain preventative maintenance program & coordinate service schedule with mechanics or outsource vendors.
    • Work with Operations Manager to ensure plants are manufacturing accurately at peek efficiencies.
  • Coordinate the receipt, storage, handling, and shipment of all products.
  • Hire, discipline and train all employees.
  • Maintain terminal property and equipment.
  • Ensure mobile and stationary equipment inspection programs are fully implemented and followed.
  • Ensures that all data in SAP pertaining to the terminal inventories, product received and shipped is accurate.
  • Coordinates terminal shipping activities with sales office, customers, trucking firms, distribution personnel, suppliers, government officials, and manufacturing locations.
  • Promotes Argos name/brand and ensures good community stewardship.
  • Actively involved in preparation and implementation of FSP.
  • Ensure cargo loading/ discharge plans and procedures are adhered to.
  • To ensure that all assets pertaining to the ship/barge fleet within region are maintained in top operating condition. 
  • To ensure all federal, state and local Regulations are met, along with facilitating compliance to permits, inspections, certifications. 
  • To ensure fleet compliance with all USCG & ABS regulatory requirements for structure, design and vessel system operations
  • To work with plant/terminal personnel in order to improve loading/unloading efficiencies.
  • Working with subcontractors and shipyards in order to have emergency breakdowns repaired in a cost effective and timely manner.

Technical knowledge and certifications

Skills and Abilities:

  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Good knowledge of products, including uses and limitations.
  • Ability to effectively interface with diverse groups (customers, sales, regional staff, truckers, local authorities, neighbors, etc.).
  • Ability to work with, and effectively manage people.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude to operate and maintain various types of equipment.
  • Must be familiar with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Disciplined self starter.

  • Ability to read and understand cost reports and direct terminal activities within budget limitations.
  • Computer literacy.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions percentages, area, circumference and volume, discounts, commissions and interest.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write detailed reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups and employees associated with the organization.  

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form, and understand abstract and concrete variables.

Experience

3 - 6 years

Area of experience

Area Experience:

  • Working knowledge of concrete products and production processes
  • Ability to read and understand operations/machine manuals and/or diagrams
  • Minimum – Three (3) years shop/operational experience
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical abilities
  • Possess a general knowledge of construction and Concrete

Experience/Skills Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to work effectively following all plant safety policies and safe work practices
  • Physically able to perform the essential functions of the position
  • Self-starter with sound judgment, positive attitude
